How are NVQs assessed?
NVQ’s are work-based qualifications and require the candidate to demonstrate his/her competency when carrying out their activities. This is done by a qualified NVQ assessor observing the candidate at work and also in other sessions when the candidate’s knowledge and understanding is similarly assessed. NVQs offer a very ‘friendly’ route to candidates gaining recognised qualifications, as they simply focus on how the candidate performs his/her job activities.
The course will be assessed entirely in the workplace by a qualified assessor by way of observation
• of the candidate carrying out normal work activities associated with the NVQ they are enrolled on;
• examining workplace evidence collected by the candidate, such as pre-start check sheets, fault/defect reports etc
• questioning the candidate to confirm knowledge and understanding of own role.

For individuals who have current hands-on experience as lift truck or crane operatives and carry out lift truck or crane operations regularly as part of their job role.

Course Outline
This NVQ is intended for lift truck operators and crane operators within a workplace environment. Individuals may demonstrate their competence at work in performing lift truck or crane operations in any industry sector, against the standards of the NVQ.
EAL Accredited NVQ Centre to deliver the following:
NVQ Level 2 Plant Operations on:
• Counterbalance Lift Trucks
• Overhead Crane
• Mobile Elevated Working Platform Scissor
• Mobile Elevated Working Platform Boom
• Mobile Elevated Working Platform Vehicle mounted
• Slinger/Signaller
The evidence collected will be specific to he lift truck and attachment type on which the assessment takes place. The lift truck, energy source and attachment type must be clearly stated on all documentation and will be valid for that truck an attachment type only.
The categories of cranes include overhead.
To achieve the full NVQ, candidates must achieve 4 units.

5.1.1 Maintain security in ports
• Group A – at least 2 Units no more than 3
4.1.2 Work safely with dangerous cargo
4.1.3 Work safely near water
4.1.4 Survive in the water
4.1.5 Work safely when alone
4.1.6 Work safely at heights
4.1.7 Work safely in confined spaces
4.1.8 Undertake safety inspections
4.2.1 Respond to shore based emergency situations
4.2.2 Respond to a pollution incident
4.2.3 Administer first aid
4.2.4 Respond to emergency situations aboard vessels

1.3.4 Drive heavy vehicles on and off Ro/Ro vessels
1.3.5 Trim and clean out dry bulk cargo
1.4.1 Operate equipment for moving bulk liquids

2.2.2 Position access equipment on vessels
6.1.1 Plan and coordinate the routine maintenance of port plant and equipment
